Synopsis: A five-year-old Indian boy gets lost on the streets of Calcutta, thousands of kilometers from home. He survives many challenges before being adopted by a couple in Australia; 25 years later, he sets out to find his lost family.
My Review: Great movie. Very powerful and life-affirming. Gives hope in our often dreary/depressing world. This movie inspired me and renewed my hope of what is possible against overwhelming odds.Dev Patel gives a fantastic and believable performance as a man searching for his family after being separated when he was 5 years old. Using Google Earth and remembering his home (through the eyes of a child), he is able to track down his home and reunite with his biological family. Nicole Kidman is usually so fragile, I find it hard to relate to her, but she gives a very convincing performance of an ordinary woman full of extraordinary love. She not only allows, but encourages him to find his biological mother. I usually don’t like child actors because they are allowed to be “cute” and the Directors let them get away with that. However, I found the child actor playing the 5 year old Saroo honest and believable. I like when movies are based on real people, the filmmakers show them at end. I love the final reveal at end where we learn where the title “LION” comes from!
Thank you Mr Weinstein Company for giving me access to this movie so I could make an intelligent and informed opinion when casting my vote on the 23rd Annual SAG Awards.

There is much I enjoyed about this film. But several things less so. We’re left to fill in the blanks on the long span between child and adulthood.
We’re left with more family and relationship dysfunction then I really expect. As designed it tugs well on heart strings. I thought the kids did a great job. Much is glossed over. Still enjoyable but could have been a bit better.
Hi Matthew. Thanx for your feedback. I agree there were huge jumps in time. I wish they had explained a bit more about the troubled younger brother. Also, what happenned to the Fathers – both biological and adopted. Still a great movie and gives me hope for humanity. Something we definitely need right now.
