How viewed: Century 18 Sam’s Town honored my SAG-AFTRA card to see this movie.
Synopsis: WWII American Army Medic Desmond T. Doss, who served during the Battle of Okinawa, refuses to kill people, and becomes the first man in American history to receive the Medal of Honor without firing a shot.
My Review: Fantastic movie with a very positive message. I am a Christian, but don’t like a lot of faith-based movies. They usually sound hokey. However, HACKSAW RIDGE was totally believable. Doss believes in God and doesn’t make anyone else conform to his beliefs. At first, he was looked down on and beat up for them. Later his company came to respect and believe in him/his beliefs so much, they defied orders from a superior officer until he joined them. Not a big fan of Andrew Garfield, but I felt he did a fantastic job as a true believer of God in WWII. I thought the reason he would never shoot a gun was because he had accidentally shot his brother or Mother when struggling with his Dad for the gun as a teenager, but that was not in the script. The Cast/Ensemble/Stunts sounded and acted true. I believed they were in a war. I can’t imagine the complexity of the Shot List required to film all that. I love that the filmmakers included interviews with some of the actual subjects at the end. I got choked up hearing some of them remembering the war.

Thank you Mr Cinemark for giving me access to this movie so I could make an intelligent and informed opinion when casting my vote on the 23rd Annual SAG Awards. I wish ALL the Cinemarks would do that. I wish Mr Cross Creek Pictures and Mr Summit Entertainment respected me/my vote enough to give me access via screening, DVD, digital streaming, or movie cash.
